UTM Pelti Oy: "At S&N Metal, things get done with a single phone call."
The Scandic Hakaniemi hotel building at Siltasaarenkatu 14 represents the straightforward commercial architecture typical of the area from the late 1950s. The insulation and ventilation of the heritage building's old copper roof required renewal, whereby the old copper roof was recycled and the new roof was constructed as a traditional machine-seamed roof. The new copper roof was carried out by UTM Pelti Oy, which has decades of experience in restoration projects.
UTM Pelti Oy's Pekka Kernisalo explains that the roof installation required several different copper materials, all of which were immediately available at S&N Metal's pick-up warehouse. In copper roofing, a machine closes the seams of long rows made from 0.6 x 610 copper strip, but the eaves and chimney flashings, as well as the window flashings in this particular project, are handcrafted from 1,000 mm copper sheet. The roof materials always follow the project's work specifications.
Materials are ordered directly to the roof as the project progresses, Pekka explains, adding that the central location of S&N Metal's pick-up warehouse is an absolute advantage, as materials cannot be left standing at the construction site. He also appreciates that the product is always of high quality. I enjoy doing business with a reliable and professional partner, and if something isn't known, it's immediately looked into, he describes.
At S&N Metalli, copper roofing strip is available in three different widths: 610 mm, 700 mm and 1,000 mm. This particular roof was carried out using bright copper strip, Pekka explains, noting that copper strip is also available from S&N Metal in Nordic Brown pre-patinated finish. Nordic Brown is available from the pick-up warehouse in 1,000 mm width, for example, which is well suited for discreet repairs of copper roofs.
The valuable and refined ensemble is completed by copper walkways and snow guards on the roof. Many of the heritage buildings in Hakaniemi have copper roofs, and therefore Pekka greatly appreciates that the new roof was also carried out in copper. This way, the area's appearance remains uniform. Next, Pekka heads to a facade project in Töölö, where copper downpipes and window sills are being installed for a housing association. Pekka states he will soon be back for more copper purchases, as "at S&N Metal, things get done with a single phone call."
